Bella’s Engagement Ring: No Wonder She Said No!

Whitley | April 27, 2010 | 9 Comments

My reaction after I saw the ring can best be summed up by this:

Dudes, I just don’t even know where to begin here.

First of all, here’s a disclaimer, because I have had a BUTT LOAD of new people visiting the site due to THIS post that has been shared all over the internet, and as I’m typing right now, has been viewed over 4,000 times since Friday. I truly appreciate all the new visitors (*waves to all the newbies reading right now*) and I hope you stick around!

But some people out there seem to think that I wrote it, and since the little captions aren’t all that flattering to Edward, a few people are laboring under the impression that I am Team Jacob. And they are irate about that.

Seriously.

I didn’t write it, not at all, not one little bit. Like I posted at the end of the photos: It came from Jezebel.com, a fuckawesome feminsim blog where I read and comment daily. One of the editors, Dodai, actually has the brilliant mind that came up with it. So if you are pissed about the jokes making fun of Edward…

…Ya know, I was about to say that if you are honestly pissed about the Edward jokes, then you should take it up with her. But then I realized that some people out there WILL ACTUALLY do that, and then she will hate me forever for siccing crazy Twi hards on her. So no. No one do that.

My advice is if you are seriously mad about the Edward jokes, then please get off the internet and reflect on your life. Honestly. Go do your algebra homework before it’s due in 3rd period tomorrow or something.

And just so we are clear, I am a proud member of Team Edward.Let me repeat that, just so there is no further confusion. WHITLEY IS TEAM EDWARD. Here’s a gif I have saved on my computer to prove it.

Are we good? Alright then. Moving on to the ring business.

I don’t know about you, but I grew up in the 90′s. I was born in 1988, so I actually remember when the wardrobe on Saved By The Bell was the epitome of cool. I really looked forward to being a grown up so I could finally dress like Jessie Spano. I feel proud when looking back and I realize I was able to witness the greatness that was early 90′s pop culture.

Anyway, one of my favorite cartoons back then was a little show you may have heard of called Captain Planet. I watched that show almost religiously and I think I even had a few toys based off items the planet savin’ super heroes used on the show.

Anyone remember these?

The power is yours, guys. The power is yours.

Captain Planet rings were instantly remembered when I saw Bella’s engagement ring. So, while I don’t find that even remotely romantic, I do find it awesome, and I suppose I can thank Stephenie and Summit’s costume/prop designer for that at least.

It’s just that…so many things have been wrong in the transfer from print to film with these movies. No blood typing scene in Twilight, no “My life was a moonless night…” speech in New Moon, the look of Jasper’s entire freaking character is fucked, they couldn’t keep the damn Volvo silver for the rest of the Saga…But this. This uggo ring design gets re-created EXACTLY how it’s described in the book. Amazing.

As Eclipse Movie points out, in terms of going by the book, the ring is spot on.

“Nestled into the black satin, Elizabeth Masen’s ring sparkled in the dim light. The face was a long oval, set with slanting rows of glittering round stones. The band was gold — delicate and narrow. The gold made a fragile web around the diamonds.”

Stephenie Meyer even worked with the company now selling the ring while they were designing it so it could look exactly how she imagined.

For a lot of fans, this ring design is not their favorite. I am definitely counted among them. All I can say is I will try not to cringe too much when Edward whips it out (heh heh) during the movie.

But hey! If you really like this ring and I mean REALLY like it, you can now buy it!

Infinite Jewelry.com is now selling a few versions of the ring for… um…varying prices.

From their site:

Experience your romance with Edward Cullen in a whole new way when you slip on Bella’s Engagement RingTM! You’ll love showing off the radiant stones in this elegant, domed-oval, gold ring. In true Victorian-era design, your ring is created by master artisans with an open-work gallery and a finely polished edge that surrounds the brilliant faceted stones. How exciting for you to own the only, Original, Bella’s Engagement RingTM in the world!  We are pleased to offer this beautiful ring in three versions to suit your style and pocketbook: Fashion, Fine, and Genuine. The three versions have the same stunning appearance; they are just made of different materials. Additionally, we are happy to present this classic ring in two colors, yellow or white gold. So guys, whose already breaking out the credit cards?

It’s a bit fug, but it’s to be expected. Stephanie Meyer proved from the very first chapter of Twilight that she had no taste. I mean seriously, look how she dressed Bella. Khaki skirt? Who the fuck wears Khaki skirts? Oh I know, Mormons! (Sorry mormons, but you know I’m right). Anyyyyyway, I think they should have changed shit up just a bit to make it less fug and maybe more of a timepiece, they change every other important thing so why not do something for the better for once. Okay I’m done :D

I thought the same thing about the khaki skirt! Actually, maybe S Meyer is stuck in the 90′s! The last khaki skirt I remember seeing was probably on Jesse or Kelly from Saved by the Bell! I believe one of the girls on Captain Planet also wore a khaki skirt…LOL

I will never complain about my wedding set again !! That thing is FUGLY !!!!!!!!! In fact I might go put it on in sympathy for Bella. No wonder she hid it. Eternity sporting that thing. NO THANKS ! I can only hope they are reshootig any scene w/that ring in it. The knock off for resale looks better (not much) I know for movie making it would need to stand out,but come on. That thing.WOW..Just WOW !! My first reaction was “What year did KMart open?” It looks like something you would see in the case on the year end sale at 90% off ! Nothing on that ring says delicate or fragile. We know Bells was a klutz. Does it say anywhere in the book how many times she injured herself or others w/the ring ? Seriously that thing could take out a werewolf. MASSIVE FAIL !!!!!!!

@ Jenna- I LOL’d about the Khaki skirt!! I used to wear them all the time, and do you know why? Because we lived with a family who went to a Pentecost church, and they require women to dress in long skirts and long sleeved shirts. So yeah…I think you have a point there!

@ Reece- I also thought about how massive the ring is. It looks like Russell Crowe’s shield from Gladiator. I guess when Bella becomes a vampire, her clumsiness is no longer an issue, but until then, she could have really put an eye out with that thing!
