I Have Emerged From 11 Hours Of Reading Wide Awake

Whitley | July 18, 2009 | 9 Comments

I only got about 5 hours of sleep last night, and that was the only break I took from reading my first major fan fiction. I started at about midnight last night and was tweeting my reactions (seriously, I was a tweeting fiend last night!) as I got through the first few chapters of the story. I planned to read just the first 10 chapters, enough so that I could join in the discussion at Supers Secret Twilight Blog. (I even brought a notebook and pen with me, so I could “take notes” of what I liked and wanted to bring up on that post. Yes, I know I need to get a life.)

Yeah…that didn’t happen. I kept on reading, and then read some more, and then read more.

At about 3:30 in the morning, I was somewhere in the 20′s of the chapters and I told myself I was going to bed. I even wrote this post to give an update on my progress and to stop reading for the night. I left my mini laptop charging in the living room and went in the bedroom to lay down next to an already-been-sleeping-for-hours-Jeremy. “I can do this. It’s time for bed.” I told myself, and made myself close my eyes.

About 20 minutes later I was creeping back into the living room, feeling like a weirdo for sneaking around my own house. I snatched my laptop up (and to borrow a phrase from KD) like it was “my precious” and crept back to the bedroom to read for FOUR MORE HOURS, y’all. I couldn’t stop. I read until I couldn’t hold my eyes open anymore, then I put the computer back on the charger as Jeremy was waking up for a quick confrence call he had to do for work this morning.

When I woke up at about 2 this afternoon (yes, I know I’m so bad!), I rolled over and felt a momentary panic when I reached for my trusty laptop to continue reading and it wasn’t there. Then my sleep deprived brian remembered I had taken it back to the living room again before passing out.

I have read four more chapters today, officially taking me to Chapter 34. I’m going to force myself to go through the rest of the chapters more slowly, since I don’t have that many left. After I read this first time, I will probably go back and start over so I can do a post of my favorite parts and lines of the story because this story is just as quotable as Twilight, no lie.

As Ana Cristina warned me in the comments, I also noticed the story dragging a bit a certain parts. I wasn’t too annoyed by it because this author never claimed to be a professional, and I know from experience how hard is to write a compelling story all the way through. I read on through the slow parts because just when I was ready to skip the chapter, there was a little piece of brilliance, in the form of a witty line from Edward, a funny observation from Bella, or a hilarious combo of both that made me want to keep going.

So, to sum it up, I’m so glad I finally read this. It reminded me of reading Twilight for the first time, and just like back then, I had to stop reading a couple times and bury my face in a pillow, so as not to wake Jeremy, and have a little squee.

Now I will be scouring all my favorite blogs looking for fan fiction. I’m a full convert now guys! I already knew the girls at Twitarded were working a pretty awesome one that I need to get caught up on, and some of my other bloggy friends have entire sections of their blogs dedicated to fan fic reccomendations. I will hanging around those places A LOT more now, and I can’t wait to see what I find!

LOL You’ve been bitten! *smiles like a loon* Well, I can rest now know that if the discussion on SSTB did anything it sucked one more helpless victim into the mindless beauty that is fanfic. Welcome my friend. It’s a beautiful thing!

I truly can’t wait to hear all your thought. :) I take notes too, by the by. Thus the epic post!

Oh the precious… hum… I must go look for it now…

I can relate completely… It’s fitting that Wide Awake would give a gal insomnia. I did that last week. :)

You are a complete freak with whom I cannot relate at all. ;) I’m surprised I didn’t have Edward’s sleep deprivation symptoms considering how little sleep I got the weekend I read WA. And, the 2nd time through? Not much better…still stayed up WAY too late.

For serious! I was like, “Well, it’s a good thing she named it Wide Awake, since that’s what you are when you read it.”

I did the same thing a few months back. An excellent way to waste time when you’re stuck in bed with the stomach flu. Now if she would just post the last freakin’ chapter!!!

FUCKING LOVE WA: saw you listed at Twitarded and the post title of WA..
You are lucky to have read it now because anyday AG is putting out the final chapter before she goes to comic con (she’s on a FF panel)… Many of us have been waiting MONTHS for it. It’s been brutal but WA shines among the TwiFF’s. Other readers want to transpose it into other languages – it’s a phenomenon. I LOVE what she’s done and am very sad to say good-bye to this Edward & Bella.

here’s a cool interview over at CBA with Ag- worth the time to read!

I had heard of it before pretty much everywhere, but I had no idea how much! That’s amazing. Thanks so much for the interview link and for checking me out! I love the Twitarded ladies!
