Guys, I’m Taking The Plunge

I am not a fan fiction reader. I think this is because a traumatic event a few years ago when I was extremely bored one evening and stumbled on the cesspool of awful writing known as fanfiction.net and was pretty much horrifed by what I read. **Disclaimer** I actually just went to that site again, and it seems that the overall standard for writing has improved greatly, and that is a good thing.
I understand loving characters and a story so much that you don’t want the story to end. I have felt this way myself, many times before, so I get why people write and enjoy fan fic. However, it’s never really been for me since I am extremely turned off by most of them for an assortment of reasons. When I like a story, book, movie or whatever, I tend to be very purist about it. I don’t really like key points to be changed. When the location of the story changes, or the relationship between the characters is totally different (Bella is now Charlie’s sister? Edward is a homeless guy? Huh?) those things, to me, make me feel like some of the “magic” that the orginal story had is gone.
I’ve been aware of Twilight fan fiction for awhile, and I have enjoyed reading other people discuss the more popular ones. I’ve learned what they like about them and the different story lines that take place. So far, it’s been something I’ve been content to observe from the outside. **EDITED TO ADD** The fan fic being written at Twitarded is the only one so far that I actually have read as they post the chapters and really enjoy. The Twitarded girls could get me to do pretty much anything, though! They can do no wrong.
But, I was browsing one of my favorite blogs, the Super Secret Twilight Blog, written by the super hilar (and newly named) Cutie and saw read that there was a discussion with another one of my favorite bloggers, Ana Cristina from The Danger Magnet about this fan fiction that I’ve read about absolutely everywhere, Wide Awake.
They warned that there would be spoliers to the story, but I read on anyway. Their post is really in depth, discussing the Bella and Edward in the story and their respective backgrounds and character traits, and I have to admit, I’m officially intrigued! A quote from Ana Cristina is what really sealed it for me:
“…this is the first fanfic I’ve read that has consumed me in the same way that the Twilight Saga did. True story. Just as I was loathe to put down Twilight for one second, I hated not being able to read Wide Awake in one go. I’ve forsaken sleep, friends, and family just to read this fanfic, and I think Angstgoddess003′s characters are just as compelling as Stephenie Meyer’s are, in their own way.”
AND….I’m SOLD! I’m going to read my first fan fiction; specifically, my first Twilight fan fiction, and I’m just a teensy bit excited! I want to thank the both of them for such an awesome and informative discussion post and I can’t wait to back and read it when I’m more familiar with the story.
I’m going in. I already have the first chapter open in another tab. I’m also remembering how I was when I was reading the Twilight series for the first time, so if I’m not back in a week, send a search party (/jokesssss! I will be back sooner than that!)
Here I go.

I’m so happy you are reading it! I must give you my disclaimer though: I wrote the above comment when I was about 15 chapters into the story. It is a very, very long story. 740 (!!!) pages. Talk about intimidating. I’m now about 31 chapters in and I feel the story is losing a bit of steam. Bear in mind that’s about 380 pages in.
The author can be a bit long-winded at times, but I think she’s got her readers’ best interests at heart (I hope) at the end. I am currently taking a break from the story and will resume reading in a few days with the hopes that “Wide Awake” gets back on track.
More importantly — will we ever see Whitley’s fanfiction?

Good to know, thanks so much for that info! I knew it was pretty epic, but had no idea how long it was.
And I don’t think I could EVER write a fan fiction, much less the steamy ones everyone loves and keep a straight face, but…you never know lol

Firstly, how in the world did you call me hilarious!? Secondly, check your twitter dm! And thirdly, PLEASE let me know what you think? I’ve got a wide range of emotions and feelings towards WA and I’d love to know where you are at.
When I am reading fanfic I disassociate myself from the original cannon story. Thus I am never upset at the changes, having said that, I don’t read a ton of fanfic. I am very picky. There is SO much crap out there! But there is a lot of great stuff as well. And I look at it as supporting aspiring writers and taking part of the creative process. Where can you go wrong in that?
I am super excited to know what you think. Please comment on chpt 1-10 even if it’s a month from now.

Separating the original story sounds like a good plan, and I will def keep that in mind as I’m reading. And duh, everyone knows you are freaking funny!
Of course, I will comment as soon as I am with the first ten chapters, which will probably be pretty soon. I’m a fast reader, but even more so when it comes to Twilight-related shiz.

Whitley the story is amazing, and is the first fanfic i read that wasn’t a one shot, or joke fic. It is so compelling, and you fall so deep into the story, and really get attached to the character just like with Twilight. One of my favorite things is reading and seeing all the little bits and pieces of Twilight being thrown in, but its so subtle that it doesnt detract from this very original story parading as a Twilight fanfic.
enjoy! can’t wait to read your review!
